Player Advisory:
3D-Printed Models in Warhammer Events
HOB’s Game Cafe | Strathmore, Alberta
The short version
3D-printed models are not permitted at any event at HOB’s Game Café using Games Workshop rules (Warhammer 40,000, Age of Sigmar, Kill Team, Warcry, Horus Heresy, The Old World, Necromunda, Blood Bowl, and any other GW system). This includes the Escalation League, all tournaments, any other sanctioned or branded play, as well as casual play. A player who fields 3D-printed models will be disqualified from an event and/or asked to remove the offending models from the premises.
Why this rule exists
Games Workshop maintains a zero-tolerance policy on infringement of its intellectual property. Their published guidelines specifically prohibit:
•Counterfeit models (reproduced and sold)
•Imitation models (copying GW artwork, books, or products)
•Recasting and 3D printing of GW products, including scanned or illegally produced digital designs
•Unauthorised use of GW trademarks on similar products or services
When a store sells models under the Warhammer banner and knowingly permits infringing models on the table, the store is exposed. HOB’s license to sell Warhammer products is on the line. That license is what keeps Warhammer on our shelves and Warhammer events on our calendar. We ask that players not put the store at risk.
The Rules
1.Any player using 3D-printed models in a Games Workshop event at the store endangers the store’s license, whether the printing is done by the player, a friend, or a commercial printer.
2.If a store official becomes aware that a player is fielding 3D-printed models (outside of Games Workshop’s narrowly defined exemptions for scratch-built models and peripherals), the player will be disqualified from any event in progress, and asked to remove the offending models from the premises. A player thus disqualified will not be entitled to a refund.
3.Printed parts on a GW model. A printed bit, weapon, or piece of wargear added to an otherwise GW model is allowed at the event organizer’s discretion, provided the part does not copy a Games Workshop design. If in doubt, ask before the event.
4.Scratch-built models and proxies require advance written permission from the event organizer, by email. Opponents must be informed of the variance. A player who cannot produce the organizer’s written approval cannot field the models in question.
5. Disputes go to the organizer first. Players may appeal to Nathalie, whose decision is final.
6.Continued non-compliance, or disrespect toward staff or organizers, will not be tolerated and may affect a player’s standing at future events.
What is still allowed
Bring your printed terrain, your custom objective markers, your tokens and movement trays. Bring kit-bashes, conversions, and paint schemes that show off the hobby at its best. None of that is in question. Print whatever you like for D&D and other non-GW games.
If you are unsure whether a particular model qualifies, ask before the event begins, not at the table. Remember that you need written authorization from the organizer for any variance.
